DIY Camper Van with Indoor Shower & 100% Solar (no propane) – Van Life Tour

This couple built a beautiful DIY campervan conversion that includes a toilet, shower, hot water, and a closet – full tour and budget! Also, you can sign up for your FREE trial to The Great Courses Plus here:

Marjolaine and Alex are a super nice couple from Canada who decided they wanted to take a year to travel all the way down to Panama and back. They financed a 2018 Ford Transit and completed their conversion in 3 months. You can follow their adventures on Instagram at:

One thing that we found different from other conversions we’ve seen is that they wanted to avoid using propane in the van since it was such a small space. Instead, they’ve got 2 x 270 Watt solar panels on the roof, 2 x 250 amp hour AGM batteries and a 3000 Watt power inverter so that they can run all their systems using electricity.

They’ve got an electric hot water heater, an induction cooktop, LED lights, and a 12-volt fridge.

They also included a ton of storage under their benches, above the countertops, and even found a way to have a closet for hanging clothes.

The indoor hot water shower is something we rarely see in vans, but Alex and Marjo found a way to do it. They also have a cassette toilet that can be taken out of the shower stall when they shower.

We hope you enjoy checking out their van conversion!

This is NOT an RV….. This IS a home on wheels. There are many nice DIY conversions but this is really impressive.Truly. The wisdom of simplicity and The luxury of efficiency.
You have done a GREAT job.. safe and rewarding travels.

Really nice job on the van. Looks a lot like living on a sailboat. We live on a 36 foot boat in Mexico. Hope to head south next year to El Salvador and Panama. Maybe we’ll see you along the way!

I agree with the others, their electrical system looks MAJORLY underpowered. And I barely know anything about electrical systems, but I can tell you that. Cooking with an induction burner alone (or any non-propane for of cooking) is an incredible draw on any system. Let alone the rest of their build

Did you plan the plumbing & electric layout with the cabinets using CAD software or eyeball? Great sink! The white seems like it shouldn't work but, it makes a really nice inviting space.
Do you have a rough curb weight on the post build van? 10mpg or less than that ?
Don't forget a DIY awning of some kind.
BOL on your adventure & thanks for sharing

Gas is expensive in some parts of Mexico. Be sure the gas attendants zero out the pump before starting pumping the gas. Your build looks beautiful.
Check out Trent and Allie or the Nomadic Movement channels. They are in Mexico. Maybe Ennon and Bec's channel.

Sweet couple. Great build. "The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth and even forever more…The Lord bless you and keep you and make His face to shine upon you and give you peace." Happy trails ;D
