The REAL Thai Lantern Festival | Authentic Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai, Thailand (Part 1)

Everyone has seen the beautiful Lantern Festival (Yee Peng) celebrated in Chiang Mai, but little know the fact that it is actually a Chinese festival. On the same night, the Thai festival of Loy Krathong is celebrated, so we decided to celebrate the local way. We made Krathongs with kids at a school where our friend Paddy works to release in the river, but first we stumbled upon the most beautiful monk ceremony we’ve ever seen!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years 🙂 Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. 🙂

Hey y’all! If you don’t already know, Kara and Nate are currently traveling around Cuba! They don’t have access to internet there, so they scheduled these videos to post ahead of time. This is Kara’s sister, Kassie. 🙂

I’m here to read your comments and answer any questions until they return! Feel free to comment as usual, and I’ll do my best to respond to what I can, then K & N will do the rest when they get back on Jan. 9th!

Love your channel and most content you publish but promoting Chinese lanterns is not a good thing. They harm animals can be a fire hazard and damage the environment. Yes I agree they look amazing in the dark sky but have you ever wondered where they all end up when they have burnt out? In the oceans or polluting the land. We live with in the era of starting to see the damage we have all caused. This two part video is promting this festival reaching thousand of people please be responsible and think environment. Cheers guys!

What a beautiful video! One of the best! I'm really not sure about the lantern festival… I've heard a lot about how bad it is for the environment and local ecosystem. But a stunning video nonetheless.

Thanks for keeping us nourished while K&N have no Internet Kassie! 👍

This is so sweet, I love that Patty is teaching. I love how Patty takes life, its not about the pictures or selfies, its about the experiences.

OMG, this is such a beautiful video, thank you very much. I was just in Chiang Mai, first time with my boyfriend and we instantly fell in love with the city, we were so sad when we had to leave because we made a trip around Thailand for three weeks. We were there at the End of October/Beginning of November and sadly missed the Loy Krathong, but we stumbled one night into the silver temple and there was also a very beautiful ceremopny with the monks and I think they were singing the same song as in your video, it reminded me instatntly of the great feeling that night. We are planning to travel again to Chiang Mai in 2020 and I really hope one day we will also see the Loy Krathong fest. 🙂
Do you know the name of the temple? Is it maybe Wat Phantao, we've been to this and looks pretty much like the temple.

I love seeing U-Tubers on eachother's channels. It was nice to see Paddy from The Budgeteers.
They didn't get much of a plug on your channel. People should watch their series' in order.
