Mother and Daughter Living in a Tiny House to Achieve Financial Freedom – Tour & Interview

Sylvie is a single parent who chose tiny house living as a way to offer a permanent, full-time home to her and her teenage daughter, and as a way to have more financial freedom. Her house will be paid for in 10 years, and she already has more flexibility to travel and spend time doing what she loves. She also hopes that her new minimalist lifestyle will allow her to help save money for her daughter’s studies when the time comes.

Sylvie’s beautiful tiny house is the Acacia model built by Minimaliste from l’Ile d’Orleans near Quebec City in Canada:

It was designed with 2 bedrooms, one on the main floor for Sylvie, and one for her daughter in the loft above. To ensure both women have privacy, Sylvie’s room has a sliding door, and her daughter’s loft has a folding door, and a wall on a pulley system.

The living area was designed around a comfortable 3-seater couch that easily folds into a double bed, and that has a lot of storage underneath. It’s an Ikea sofa bed that you can find here:

There are two heat sources in the house, a Martin propane fireplace, and two electric induction panels. In the summer, there’s an air conditioning unit that can double as a dehumidifier. For all seasons, there’s a Lunos air exchange system to ensure fresh air is always being circulated without losing heat or cold air. This is very important if you’re living in a small space.

The tiny home is on the grid and has a water hookup and is plugged into the electrical grid. The toilet is a Nature’s Head composting toilet.

Check out the video for a full tour of the tiny house interior, and to hear about Sylvie’s experience moving into such a small home.

Thanks for watching!

My only question is if the daughter has enough room for her stuff, or is she keeping a lot of it elsewhere? There's obviously plenty of space for two and it was optimized for one in the long term, I'm just curious.

    My thoughts about the price…

It is a very reasonnable price considering it is built to withstand cold winters. We had -42 degrees Celcius with the windshield factor this X-mas that lasted close to 2 weeks. Boy!! Was i glad that the builder knows what that weather feels like and how to build according to it. You also have to respect the amount of work they put in it in such a short period of time, listening to my story and trying to create a safe house that i would feel just like one with. This builder and his team are professionnals in so many ways. They are like artists, pouring their heart and soul into a project to make it perfect for their clients. I am a minimalist but the quality of the house is not something to throw out the window. I compare my house to an original painting. When you fall in love with a painting, you pay the price it’s worth in respect to the person who was holding the paint brush…

To Phil and his team, thank you! 😘

C'est une des mini les plus réalistes et vivable que j'ai vu à date.
Plein de petits trucs multi-usages… rangement, table, divan, chambres avec fenêtre intérieure et portes pliante ou coulissante. Tout est bien planifié. Bravo.

Wow, that makes me feel even more grateful for what I have. And I have a possibility to have a much bigger house (around 2 times) in a super nice rural area (with lots of forests, mountains, meadows which I love) that could be paid off in less than just TWO years. Yet I'm still considering moving to my capital city for career reasons, education reasons and possibly family reasons, finding love, having children. Tough choice for me.

yes i've been watching the Minimalist tiny houses and I really like their design ideas. And the invitation to the customer to design it as much or as little as we want. Love this one as i am a single mom with a teen daughter, living with me and we have our 3rd family member in Portland. So space would be of the utmost importance. I love the let down on the upper loft to air it out or let them peek out from time to time.

WOW!

I love how she set this up and that the main bedroom is on the main floor. That would def be an option I would choose for myself. She did an amazing job on the design and the landscaping.

I love the downstairs bedroom and the full three person sofa, that actually looks like a normal sofa. So often I see very narrow and cramped sofa put in tiny houses that's too high off the ground, to narrow to lounge on, and too short to lay down on and read a book. This is one of the few tiny houses that also looks lived in by a regular person who wants a washer dryer, full sized shower, and a four burner stove.

So she's the one who bought one of Minimaliste' house 😄 their houses are always pretty.
I can still remember Phil when he was doing the video tour for this house (they called it Acacia). Its nice to see how the houses turned out.

I loved the tour of this house by the builder when it was empty, but seeing it lived in is wonderful. I didn't think it could get better, but I was wrong. This tiny house is amazing. I love how everyone was considered in the build and has their own space- even the lizard. Fantastic build out and design!
